Congratulations are in order for artist Ric Gendron, who walked away with two major awards this past week at the Santa Fe Indian Market, both for a monoprint created at Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts.
Gendron entered a framed print from the series “A Quiltsten Song” into the juried exhibition. The print went on to win a first-place ribbon in printmaking and a best-of-division award for two-dimensional graphic arts (painting, printmaking, photography, etc.). Gendron created that print series and three others alongside Master Printer Frank Janzen during a weeklong residency in May. An accomplished acrylic painter, Gendron said he hadn’t previously worked in printmaking for about 25 years.
This actually marks the second time a Crow’s Shadow artist has won awards for their prints at the Indian Market. In 2008, artist Phillip John Charette also won first-place and best-of-division awards for a print in his “Medicine” monotype series, also created at Crow’s Shadow.
Frank Janzen and the rest of the Crow’s Shadow staff and Board of Directors were delighted to receive the news of Gendron’s success.
“As printmaking is not his main medium, and having been out of touch with it for 25 years, his ability to create such an excellent body of work and then go and immediately win these prizes is a real testimony to his ability as an artist,” Janzen said. “And for Crow’s Shadow to now have two award-winning prints come out of the shop is pretty amazing.”
The Santa Fe Indian Market is an annual event dating back more than 80 years and ranks as the world’s largest and most acclaimed Native American arts show.
