Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts and the CTUIR Tribal Senior Center Program are teaming up for a community project Aug. 12-14 and are looking for a handful of student (high school age) volunteers.
The project will include tribal and non-tribal elders from the senior center program working alongside high school youth to create original holiday greeting cards, using simple printmaking techniques at the Crow’s Shadow studio. The class size will be small, comprising 10 elders and five students total, allowing one student to collaborate and interact with two elders at a time.
Participating students will have one half-day workshop with Master Printer Frank Janzen to review Crow’s Shadow Press protocol and engage with the materials (paper, inks, press, etc.) they will be using with the elders. The next two days will consist of students assisting the elders with choosing paper, colors, designs and words that will make up their cards.
Elders will be shown a variety of ways to create custom-made greeting cards that they can use for any purpose they wish. The printing process allows them to make a small “edition” of cards with their own design, colors and greeting.
Crow’s Shadow will provide studio space, materials, instruction and lunch for three days. Transportation will be provided by the Senior Center. However, Crow’s Shadow can help with some transportation with youth or seniors, if needed.
Interested youth from Nixya’awii Community School or elsewhere in the vicinity of the Pendleton area are encouraged to call Feather Huesties, executive director, at 276-3954.
