Crow’s Shadow has been proud to host Ellen Kaline as its summer intern from Willamette University in Salem, Ore. Ellen arrived in Pendleton in June and has been working in the Crow’s Shadow Press studio alongside Master Printer Frank Janzen.
Originally from Billings, Mont., Ellen will be returning to Willamette in the fall as a sophomore. She plans to double major in studio art and economics.
During her stay Ellen has worked as the studio press assistant for the printing of four editions by artist Wendy Red Star, who resided at Crow’s Shadow for two weeks in June. Ellen had the important task of sponging lithographic plates, both during the creative approval-to-print process and during the actual edition printing.
“Sometimes the plate stars acting up and the ink will start building up in certain spots and we’ll have to do it again,” Ellen said of the printing process. “It’s really repetitive work but you learn a lot.”
Ellen also went through the entire permanent collection of Crow’s Shadow Press prints, documenting pieces from each series and lithographic edition for future archival at Willamette’s Hallie Ford Museum of Art.
Outside of the studio, Ellen has visited other sights, such as Tamastslikt Cultural Institute, the Pendleton Underground Tours and the Pendleton Farmer’s Market. Naming some of her favorite experiences thus far, Ellen said she enjoyed getting to view Crow’s Shadow prints and meeting Wendy Red Star.
“She was awesome, really an intelligent person and youthful and a creative thinker. I like how she thinks,” Ellen said. “I’m having fun.”
Ellen will be at Crow’s Shadow through mid-August.
