Dates: March 17-18, 2012

Time: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Instructor: Frank Janzen, Tamarind Master Printer

Class size: 12 participants maximum

Workshop Fee: $210.00 (a $50.00 non-refundable deposit is required upon registration)

This two-day workshop is an introduction to photolithography. Participants do not need any previous printmaking experience, only a desire to experiment. They will be taken through the simple step-by-step process to print a small edition.

Particular emphasis will be placed on various drawing techniques that will be demonstrated, including lithography pencils and crayons on textured Mylar, toner powder suspended in alcohol on clear Mylar and including the use of stencils. Transferring photographic images to a litho plate will be demonstrated using the computer to create a dot matrix of the photograph before printing it on to clear transparency film to transfer it to the photolithography plate.

Using black ink is the easiest introduction to printing photo plates, but we will demonstrate the use of colored inks as well.

We will be primarily using the two lithography presses, however, we will demonstrate the use of etching presses to print a lithograph.

Each participant will receive the following included in the workshop fee:
  • (1) 12 ¾” x 18” photo litho plate
  • (1) 12 ¾” x 18” Artex textured drawing film
  • (1) 12 ¾” x 18” clear Mylar
  • (2) 8 ½” x 11” transparency films
  • (8) 11” x 15” Rives BFK white paper sheets (this will easily allow a participant to print a single color edition of at least 5 prints)

More plates and paper are available at our cost. All others materials such as inks, solvents and rags are included.
