Info: The purpose of this workshop is to create a finished wing dress. Participants will sew two garments, the dress and the under dress. Wing dresses are worn for customary gatherings, celebrations, and social dances.

Participants will need to bring the following supplies:
  • A sewing machine
  • Fabric for the under dress – 3 ½ yards. & outer dress – 3 yards. (NOTE: These measurements are for an average sized person. If unsure on how much fabric you will need, using a tape measure, measure from the bottom of your heel to top of shoulders, then double that number. This is how much fabric you will need for your outer dress. The under dress is about the same measurement.)
  • Matching thread
  • 5 or 10 yards of ribbon
  • Please bring a sack lunch with you for Saturday. We have kitchen facilities available if you need them.

Instructor Lonnie Alexander (Nez Perce) is a respected food gatherer, dancer, and artist of the Columbia Plateau. She sews traditional clothing for men and women, does bead work, basket weaving, portraiture in oils, calligraphy, black and white photography, and uses acrylics on wood.

Instructor Michelle “Patch” Burke (Cayuse) has been studying traditional arts with Lonnie Alexander for over 30 years. She does bead work, makes Plateau style baby boards, and sews traditional clothing for men and woman.
