Biography

Raven Chacon (Diné) has an extensive resume as an artist, composer, and performer. In his solo compositional work, he has collaborated with a diverse range of performance-based groups, including Kronos Quartet, the Arizona Opera, and the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival. In 2020 he collaborated with Du Yun for a major opera production, Sweet Land, with The Industry (Los Angeles). From 2007 to 2018 he was a member of Postcommodity, a collaborative art group known for large scale, multi-media art installations, and performances. Together they produced works such as Repellent Fence and A Very Long Line, exhibiting the results of these projects in venues such as the Whitney Biennial (2017), documenta 14 (2017), the Denver Art Museum, and the Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, NM. Chacon has an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and has served on the Music and Native American Studies faculties at the University of New Mexico.

Funded by the generous support of Oregon Community Foundation’s Creative Heights Grant and in collaboration with the Oregon East Symphony (OES), Crow’s Shadow hosted Chacon for almost three weeks, January 28th – February 17th, 2019. While in-studio, Chacon worked with Crow’s Shadow Master Printer Judith Baumann to produce fine art prints based on his unique compositional notations. The results of his printmaking residency was on display at the Vert Auditorium on February 16th for the premiere of a new chamber orchestral work commissioned by OES, and the following day at Crow’s Shadow on February 17th, for a matinee reprisal of his composition.
