Biography

Zhang Yunling is of the Naxi ethnic group from Lijang in the Yunnan province of China. Born in 1955, he has devoted himself to the study of the Naxi culture and art through his painting and his depictions of Naxi, the only living pictographic language in the world. Since 1987, he has exhibited his works in China, Japan, France, South Korea and the United States. One of his paintings is in the collection of the Japanese royal family. He teaches at various universities in the city of Kumming. His lithographs produced at Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts were made while he was a visiting artist/professor at Whitman College on a Freeman East Asia Grant.
