MISSION, Ore.— Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts (CSIA) is pleased to present Nixya’awii Community School Printmaking Exhibition for the fifth consecutive year. This exhibition showcases the prints produced by a group of high school students from NCS. This year’s printmaking students are: Ermia Butler, Isabelle LeCornu, Elle Marsh, Cloe McMichael, Kylie Mountainchief, Latis Nowland, Eva Oatman, and Tyanna Van Pelt. Over the past school year they have been learning printmaking in the Crow’s Shadow studio under the direction of CSIA Master Printer, Judith Baumann.
Over the course of the year, the students have been able to practice several different printmaking processes with a focus on silkscreen and linocut prints. They also had the opportunity to meet several of Crow’s Shadow’s Artists-in-Residence, getting to talk with significant contemporary Indigenous artists from around the nation including Raven Chacon, Ka’ila Farrell-Smith, Marwin Begaye, and Yatika Fields.
Most recently, during Yatika Fields’ (Osage, Cherokee, and Creek) Artist Residency in April, they began a collaborative drawing where each student drew a regional wildflower to combine into one large drawing for a lithograph plate. Each student will be adding layers of color to their individual versions of the print—to make unique monoprints. These collaborative prints, as well as all of their individual projects will be on display in the gallery for this special annual exhibition.
Please join Crow’s Shadow for the opening reception, on Friday, May 24 from 5 – 7 pm, to view the student’s artwork and honor their achievements. Prints will be available for sale, with 100% of proceeds going directly to the student artists.
The exhibition can be viewed during Crow’s Shadow’s regular hours, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, until the show closes. The Crow’s Shadow gallery is free to visit and open to the public; finished student works can also be seen at Crow’s Shadow throughout the year.
