This raffle was a great way to share more information about James Lavadour’s artwork and was a very successful fundraiser for Crow’s Shadow. The raffle ticket sales brought in $5,700 for Crow’s Shadow programming, which is pretty fantastic for us! We appreciate your generosity in supporting CSIA; as a small non-profit every dollar really does make a difference.
The JAMES LAVADOUR monotype raffle is a fundraiser to benefit Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts (CSIA). The prize is a monotype made with oil paint on paper, Untitled, by James Lavadour, valued at $3,500. This completely unique impression was made by Lavadour at Crow's Shadow in 2010. It has been largely unseen, and Lavadour has generously donated it as a benefit to Crow's Shadow.
The winning ticket number will be randomly generated by RaffleCreator.com and announced on February 1, 2019. Raffle tickets are $100 each, if all tickets are sold the odds of winning are 1 in 99.

This raffle drawing is a fundraiser for Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts, an artist residency program, fine print studio, and publisher located on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in the foothills of Oregon’s Blue Mountains. Our mission is to provide a creative conduit for educational, social, and economic opportunities for Native Americans through artistic development. Crow’s Shadow is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization formed in 1992 by local artists James Lavadour (Walla Walla), Phillip Cash Cash (Cayuse and Nez Perce) and friends. Over the last 26 years Crow’s Shadow has evolved into a world-class studio focused on contemporary fine art printmaking.
James Lavadour’s artwork is deeply connected to the landscapes of his ancestral homelands in eastern Oregon. He grew up in the foothills of the Blue Mountains on the Umatilla Reservation near Pendleton, Oregon. An avid hiker, Lavadour’s connection to this geography is reflected in the slow and labor-intensive processes he undertakes in his daily painting practice. Paint becomes a vehicle to mimic the gradual layering and subsequent erosion, exposing the trace of previous vestiges of color. Lavadour favors translucent glazes, which leave hints of each preceding layer, creating tremendous depth and luminosity through these topographical surfaces. Often juxtaposing vivid color with subdued passages, each painting strikes a balance between serenity and optical vibration. Lavadour has been making artwork and exhibiting for more than four decades. Long held in high esteem among the art world in the Pacific Northwest, Lavadour’s paintings have also been shown in numerous major institutions throughout the United States, with more national recognition building over the last ten years.
Lavadour has exhibited at: The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (in both Washington, DC and New York, NY); The Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, IN; Portland Art Museum in Portland, OR; the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, AR; and the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, NM, among many others. Notably, Lavadour, with the assistance of his Portland gallerist, Jane Beebe of PDX Contemporary, were invited to bring a large grid of 15 of his paintings to show in Personal Structures at the Palazzo Bembo in the 2013 Venice Biennale.
In 2018 his work was added to the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. A significant turning point occurred in 1990 when Lavadour was invited to do a Fellowship at Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking (now the Brodsky Center) housed at the Mason Gross School of Arts at Rutgers in New Brunswick, NJ. While visiting Rutgers, Lavadour worked with Master Printer, Eileen Foti, who encouraged Lavadour to get a press for his studio. Two years later, Lavadour had assembled a team of interested artists and likeminded friends and in 1992 Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts (CSIA) was founded.
Crow’s Shadow has a prestigious artist-in-residence program and is the only professional fine art lithography studio on a Native American reservation in the United States. Located in the same area where Lavadour grew up, Crow’s Shadow enjoys the same formative vistas and inspiring quietude that propels Lavadour’s studio practice. More than twenty-five years after its founding, Crow’s Shadow is still guided with Lavadour’s vision in mind.
2018 JAMES LAVADOUR RAFFLE FUNDRAISER RULES
Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts (“CSIA”), an Oregon nonprofit and tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, is conducting the James Lavadour Raffle Fundraiser (the “Raffle”) to raise funds for its ongoing charitable activities and purposes. The rules (the “Rules”) of the Raffle, set forth below, govern the Raffle, award of prizes, and participation in the Raffle.
These Rules bind every person (a “Ticket Holder”) who buys or holds a Raffle ticket. By purchasing or holding a ticket, each Ticket Holder agrees (a) to be bound by these Rules and (b) that CSIA’s interpretation and application of these Rules is conclusive and final. The Prize Drawing for the Raffle will take place at 12:00 noon PST on February 1, 2019 at Crow’s Shadow, 48004 Saint Andrew’s Road, Pendleton Oregon, 97801.
The final ticket purchase deadline for entry is midnight PST January 31, 2019. Only 99 tickets will be sold. There will be one Prize awarded, as described under the Prize section.
The drawing is open to the public, and the winner need not be present to win.
TICKETS
Raffle tickets cost $100 each. If all 99 tickets are sold the odds of winning are 1 in 99.
Only one Eligible Ticket Purchaser (as defined below in the “Eligibility” section of these Rules) may purchase a ticket. This means, (a) one name per ticket and (b) one purchaser per ticket. An Eligible Ticket Purchaser may designate another person a Ticket Holder. If a ticket names more than one person as a Ticket Holder and that ticket is a winning ticket, then CSIA will (a) deem the person named first on the ticket as the Ticket Holder, (b) declare the first person named on the ticket as the winner, and (c) award the prize to the first person named on the ticket. In such case, the division of the prize shall be the sole responsibility of the first person named on the ticket. Once CSIA awards the prize to the first person named on a ticket, CSIA will have no further duties or obligations with respect to the division of the prize and all persons named on a ticket as Ticket Holders release CSIA from all claims relating to the award of the prize or its division among other persons on a ticket named as Ticket Holders.
Raffle tickets are not tax-deductible. The IRS has taken the position that amounts paid for chances in Raffles, lotteries or similar drawings for valuable prizes are not gifts and therefore do not qualify as deductible charitable contributions. Raffle prizes valued above $5,000 are subject to federal income taxation.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible to purchase a ticket, a ticket purchaser (an “Eligible Ticket Purchaser”) must (a) be at least 18 years old at the time of purchase, and (b) be a U.S. resident physically residing in the United States or District of Columbia.
Current CSIA employees may not purchase a ticket and are not eligible to win the prize. CSIA board members may purchase tickets and are eligible to win the prize.
CSIA reserves the right to require reasonable evidence of the eligibility of an Eligible Ticket Purchaser or Ticket Holder at any time and to void any ticket sold to a person who does not meet the eligibility requirements or who is precluded by applicable law from holding a ticket or participating in a raffle.
HOW TO PURCHASE TICKETS
Eligible Ticket Purchasers may purchase Raffle tickets online at https://rafflecreator.com/pages/16464/james-lavadour-raffle or by calling CSIA at 541-276-3954. At the time of purchase, Eligible Ticket Purchasers must provide their name, address, phone number, credit card number, credit card security code and expiration date, and email or other such information as CSIA may require. Eligible Ticket Purchasers may also purchase tickets by mail or in person at Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts, 48004 St. Andrew’s Road, Pendleton, OR 97801. All entries must include payment by check, money order, or credit card.
Tickets will be distributed and ticket numbers will be assigned in the order that payment is received. All payments will be deposited upon receipt. CSIA reserves the right to reject any entry form that it deems defective, illegible, ineligible, or submitted without “good funds.”
CSIA will mail or email unofficial raffle tickets as receipts for ticket purchases to the Ticket Purchaser within one to four weeks of purchase. Ticket Holders do not need to be present at the drawing to win the prize.
All Raffle ticket sales are final. CSIA assumes no responsibility for lost, late, misdirected, or non-delivered mail or fax messages, or any other failure to receive orders or deliver receipts prior to the drawing deadlines.
THE DRAWING
The winner will be determined through the Raffle’s online platform, RaffleCreator.com, which will randomly generate the winning ticket number, and email the winning ticket notification. Once the winner is selected by the computer and automatically notified CSIA will also post the winner notification on several online platforms including the Raffle’s website, CSIA’s website, and Facebook.
At the discretion of CSIA, the ticket purchase deadline may be modified (the Final Ticket Purchase Deadline) along with the drawing date, time, and location. The Raffle winner will be posted on the Raffle website (www.rafflecreator.com) and the CSIA website. CSIA will have the final authority in the event of any disputes regarding the drawing.
PRIZE

Final Purchase Deadline: midnight PST January 31, 2019, or once all available (99) tickets are sold out
Drawing: February 1, 2019 at 12:00 noon PST
Prize: Untitled Oil Paint Monotype made by James Lavadour ($3,500 value). No substitutions allowed. The prize print is unframed. Shipping or delivery charges, if winner cannot pick up the artwork, will be arranged and paid for at the discretion of CSIA, shipping fees over $50 will be the responsibility of the winner.
Rules Applicable to All Ticket Buyers and All Prizewinners
CSIA will make reasonable efforts to contact prizewinner using information provided on the winning entry form. If a prizewinner does not contact CSIA within 30 business days after the first initial contact notifying the prizewinner of their winnings, then CSIA shall give notice to such prizewinner by U.S. Postal Service certified mail, return receipt requested, at the address set forth in the information provided by the Eligible Ticket Purchaser. This notice shall state (a) the prize won, (b) a telephone number of a contact person at CSIA, (c) the time and location where the prize(s) can be claimed, and (d) that if the prize has not been claimed within 30 days of the date the notification is given, that CSIA may, at its option, retain the prize. If winner does not claim prize within 30 days, prize is forfeit and CSIA may assign a new winner through a random selection of the remaining ticket holders.
Each Ticket Holder agrees his/her name, likeness, voice and city of residence may be recorded by audio, video, or digital means and may be used in any print, audio or visual media without notice or compensation for any purpose, including related to this or any other CSIA Raffle, or promotional materials.
Each Ticket Holder and each ticket buyer (a) agrees CSIA, its directors, officers, and are not responsible for any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising in connection with, or as a result of, this Raffle and/or that person’s failure to win or redeem any prize, or that person’s award of, acceptance of, or use of, any prize; and (b) releases and agrees to indemnify, defend, protect, and hold harmless CSIA and their officers, directors, employees, agents, advertising agency, contractors, insurers, attorneys, accountants, and affiliated entities from and against all losses, damages, rights, claims, and actions of any kind arising in connection with, or as a result of, this Raffle and/or that person’s failure to win or redeem any prize, or that person’s award of, acceptance of, or use of any prize, or that person’s failure to comply with Applicable Law; and (c) represents and warrants to CSIA that he/she has read and understands these Rules and agrees to be bound by these Rules and CSIA’s decisions, which are final. If there is a dispute of any kind regarding the award of a prize or the conduct of the Raffle, CSIA and all persons purchasing or holding a ticket agree to arbitrate such dispute.
CSIA reserves the right to modify the Rules and/or impose additional conditions, procedures, and requirements as may be necessary or required for the Raffle and the award of prizes hereunder to comply with the laws of the State of Oregon and Applicable Law. This Raffle is void where prohibited by law.
This raffle is designed to be compliant with the Oregon Department of Justice and the taxation code outlined for Charities & Other Non-Profits designated by the Internal Revenue Service. According to the Oregon DOJ this raffle is exempt from obtaining a gaming license as CSIA qualifies as a “Nonprofit organization holding raffles with a cumulative handle of no more than $10,000 per calendar year.”
